In memory

Ota

Pedigree name:

(02/08/1992-04/13/2004)

Standard Schnauzer, Salt & Pepper

Ota was my (and our family’s) first dog. I got it for my 8th birthday – after an extended research by my parents which breed would be the most suitable for us and our lifestyle. We wanted a dog that would not be too big, be eager to learn, but not over-ridden, active, but not hyperactive.

I wanted a Chow-Chow (or something similarly fluffy), but my parents insisted we should have a dog that we can commit to giving it the care they need. And not having dog hair everywhere was an important item on the checklist, as well. So they suggested a Standard Schnauzer. Our neighbours had it, as well, his name was Iko. He was nice. So I thought – as long as it’s a dog.

But growing up with a Schnauzer, I’ve realized it’s not just a dog. It is THE dog for me.

Ota has learned me what it means to share life with a dog and be a responsible owner (well, my parents played a role in it, as well :)). I was the youngest person in Slovenia at the time to pass the A and B exam. Looking back, I’m not sure a 9-year-old can be a good handler, but obviously Ota knew how to be a perfect dog and passed the exams with flying colours.

She was my loyal companion throughout my childhood, the one who waited patiently for me to return from school, the one always up for a walk, the best motivator for hiking trips that seemed meaningless at that time. She definitely helped me grow (up). And was for sure the best birthday present I’ve got.
